EURECA Research Platform, Europe 1992From Space into the Swiss Museum of TransportEURECA is a European Space Agency (ESA) unmanned research platform. The “EUropean REtrievable CArrier“ was put into space on 2 August 1992 by Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier, using the robot-arm of the Atlantis space shuttle. The platform circled the Earth for eleven months, carrying out 71 biological and technical experiments. The Endeavour space shuttle then recaptured the EURECA and brought it back to Earth on 1 July 1993.Because financial resources were concentrated on the International Space Station ISS, the planned re-use of EURECA did not take place. The ESA presented it to the Swiss Museum of Transport, so that it remains preserved as one of the few original space vehicles in a museum.
