Model Ships in Silver
Already in the 14th century silver ships were used as table decoration. In France, on festive occasions, they were set before the king’s cover. From the 16th century onwards, silver model ships were a speciality of the German silversmiths. Towards the end of the 19th century, in the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, copies based on baroque originals were made for the dining-rooms of the upper bourgeoise.
