The hesitant start of a great railway
In its beginning, the St. Gotthard Railway, which was completed after the economic crisis in 1882, had to face financial problems. In the spirit of the private railways of that time, the first trains were composed up of small locomotives and carriages. The tender locomotive was imported from Germany. The carriages still had only two axles. It is only after the passenger traffic increased considerably that they decided to buy larger and more modern vehicles.
