Geology
When construction on the Gotthard Tunnel started, geologists were not able to predict what internal rock conditions builders might expect to find. Above all, very little was known about pressure, water and heat conditions, or about the geological structure. The tunnel construction was seized as an opportunity to study geological conditions in detail. Records and studies of Moritz Stapff, for example, formed the basis for predicting temperatures in the Simplon Tunnel.
