Austin Seven
Great Britain 1927
Cars instead of motorcycles
Herbert Austin wants to replace the motorcycle and sidecar with a car that costs the same to buy and run. Small in size, a simple A-form chassis, a tiny four cylinder engine of only 750 cc with rudimentary oil bath lubrication and rationalised, industrial-scale manufacturing should be the recipe success.
Simple and robust
A few, robust operating controls ensure that the Seven is easy to drive. The vast majority of customers are sitting behind the wheel for the first time. The Seven is nicknamed “Top hat saloon” because of its large areas of glass and upright construction and becomes the first popular car produced in Britain.
From laughing stock to international hit
The industry laughs at the “carlet” when it is introduced in 1922. But the Seven hits the spot with its customers and soon becomes a fixture in the road traffic landscape in many European countries prior to the Second World War – and for a long time afterwards in England. In Germany, Dixi-Werke in Eisenach and Lucien Rosengart in France build the Austin under licence. Dixi will become the original BMW only a little later.
