The wooden body as a symbol of skilled craftsmanship
Until well into the 1920s, the car chassis consists of a wooden frame covered by sheet metal. This type of production is costly and requires many different skilled production steps. Even the first mass-produced automobile, the model T Ford, is still fitted with this kind of chassis. In the 1920s, the closed, later self-supporting, steel body replaces the wooden chassis. New, more advanced production methods now also facilitate curved shapes and the rapid adaptation of individual car types to fashion preferences.
