Long Project
For overhaul purposes, the engine of our Lambda is dismantled in the 1960s. It is not until 1993, 20 years later, that the engine and the car are reunited when work begins on one of the museum's most complex restoration operations performed on a car.
Painstaking Work
For example, to achieve the highest degree of authenticity, the leather used for the seats is taken from warehouse stocks dating back to the original time of manufacture. No compromises are made with the lighting and signalling equipment, which is why the Lambda is fitted neither with a brake light nor with flashing indicators. It is roadworthy and, in 2005, at an event commemorating 100 years ACS (Automobile Club of Switzerland) in Zurich, wins the award "Best of the Show".
Other Points of Focus
However, and this may seem amazing; today, we prefer unrestored originals, whose outward traces tell us more about their history. For this we accept that the object is no longer drivable, not least because, thanks to an active old-timer scene, which has developed in the 50 years since the opening of the Swiss Museum of Transport, there are still many roadworthy examples bearing witness to bygone days.
