Mission: To burst the bubble
The trigger for the Mini is the Suez Crisis of 1956, which results in fuel shortage and thereby makes small cars more popular. Micro-cars, known as „bubble cars“, are very popular in the United Kingdom and help to compensate for the increased fuel prices. Alec Issigonis, a designer at the „British Motor Corporation“ (BMC), is commissioned to sweep the bubble cars from the roads with a new car.
Free hand for the new design
Issigonis, who was born in Greece, already had one success in his portfolio with the Morris Minor, and is given an almost free hand in his design. The only exception is the engine, where, for cost reasons, he has to fall back on the well-proven BMC „A“ engine. What he now did was to create history.
Vice-„Car of the Century“
In 1999, the Mini was “voted” to be one of the „Cars of the Century“, occupying second place behind the Model-T Ford. Its concept, with front-wheel drive and transverse engine, can be found today in almost every mass-produced car.
