Power from the front
In 1885, Emile Levassor wins the world's first motor race from Paris to Rouen. Together with his partner, René Panhard, whose firm he had joined, he begins in 1890 to build a motor car whose characteristic feature is the front-mounted engine.
Pioneers
In 1902, a wealthy industrialist from Glarus buys one of the first of these cars – our Panhard. The registration number GL 3104 suggests that this is the fourth car in the Canton to be registered for use on the roads. At the beginning, the numbers are allocated to the Cantons in the same form as the zip codes. Glarus receives the serial numbers 3101-3300.
Early collector's item
The Panhard B 1, an early specimen of standard motor car construction with front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, is acquired already in 1944 on loan to the collection of the just founded "Association Swiss Museum of Transport" in Zurich. In 1959, at the opening of the museum in Lucerne, it is donated by the family owners Trümpy-Heer and becomes one of the jewels of the motor car collection.
