Passenger trains on the route over the Gotthard
Even in the early days, long-distance passenger trains were comfortably appointed. Carriages were both spacious and safe. Luxurious trains operated by the Gotthardbahn railway company and Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits were the first to ply the Gotthard line; they were later joined by the Swiss Federal Railways. Fast and direct international inter-city connections became a reality in 1957 with the Trans-Europe Express. EuroCity services have been plying the international routes since 1987.
