From the composite train to the de luxe train
The development of the modern passenger coach started in the United States, were one began in 1834 already to mount coach bodies into swinging gears. A next step was to do away with the compartment arrangement of the horse-coaches. Open saloon coaches gave passengers more freedom of movement, and access to the dining and sleeping cars. In 1864, George Pullman patented his saloon and couchette car. In Switzerland, the St. Gotthard, the Jura-Simplon railway and later the Swiss Federal Railways put such de luxe trains into operation.
