Half-way house
The V10 engine (still with a 3.5 litre capacity) is first used by Honda and Renault in the 1989 season. Following the ban on turbo-engines, this number of cylinders appeared to be the best compromise between a V8 and a V12 engine. With the introduction of the 2.4 litre cubic capacity limit, in 2005, the V10 disappears from top-class racing once again, in favour of the V8 engines.
Ferrari power for Sauber
The Ferrari V10 Model 46/01 is first used for racing by Ferrari (and for the first time with Michael Schumacher) in 1996, and is the first V10 engine ever produced by Ferrari. A fortunate deal between Peter Sauber and the Italians leads to the use of this engine by the Sauber team from the following season in 1997.
A podium finish
Ferrari achieves 3 victories with the 46/01 engine in 1996, while Sauber-Petronas manages at least one podium finish in Hungary in 1997 with the engine now designated as „Petronas SPE 01 D“. The successful collaboration between the Swiss and the Italians is crowned with the 4th place in the Constructors’ class in 2001. The name Ferrari appears nowhere, however, and the engine supplier is officially the team sponsor: Petronas, the Malaysian oil company. Ferrari continues to supply engines to the racing team from Hinwil until the sale of Sauber to BMW in 2005.
