Superiority thanks to ball bearing wheels
Daniel Rudge, originally a restaurant proprietor, starts building bicycles in 1869. He invents an adjustable ball bearing, and his wheels therefore run so easily that a handicap of 20 metres behind the starting line is imposed on him in bicycle races. In 1893, the company merges with the Withworth Cycle Company, which later also manufactures motorbikes and car components.
Dangerous pleasure
The penny-farthing bicycle was the result of the search for an even faster racing velocipede. The larger the wheel, the further and faster it can travel with one revolution of the pedals. Only daring experts could risk a fast downhill run with the penny-farthing bicycle. If anything went wrong, jumping from the bike was the only possibility to avoid breaking your neck because there were virtually no brakes. And when there were, the racing cyclist was always faced with the possibility of flying over the large front wheel.
