Light-weight construction with heavy ships
As with the construction of airplanes, the light-weight construction was also the highest principle with hydrofoil boats. The Supramar PT 150 was the largest ship in the world which was completely built of aluminium. The machines were also considered to be a wonder of the light-weight construction with around 2 kg for each kW. This largest Supramar model was originally intended for the use as a car ferry. This original shipyard model comes from that time. With two successive models however this additional use was abandoned. In spite of being widely used in coastal regions, the hydrofoil boats finally yielded to the principle of the catamaran ferries.
