Electric tram motorcar Ce 2/2 No 202 Basle Tramways 1931
This vehicle was the last in a long series of two-axle cars which Basle Transport Company had acquired since 1919. The characteristics of this series were the end -wall doors and intercommunicating gangway plates so that the conductor could pass from the motorcar to the trailer while the tram was in motion. The seats also had ‘throw-over’ backs. For the first time in Basle, this series was fitted with compressed-air brakes, which made it possible to couple several cars together.

After a long period of unbridled growth, between the two world wars theauthorities began attempts to plan and control the development of their cities. They wanted in particular to allocate the town space for different functions: living, working, shopping and recreation, which required a large public transport system. This was the time when the Swiss tramway networks reached their largest extent, with a total of 470 route-kilometres. Crowds rushed on to the trams, and the transport companies had to increase capacities. Basle Tramway Company, for example, tested bigger tramcars, although with modest success. This is why between 1919 and 1931 they bought 67 more cars of the well-proven two-axle type Ce 2/2. Coach No.202 belonged to the last of these purchases.
