Swiss companies with trend-setting vehicles
One century of Swiss locomotive manufacturing
For about 100 years, the Swiss industry designed and manufactured electric locomotives. In the beginning there were 3 competing companies. This resulted in a great variety of vehicles. From 1930 on, the development was done jointly. After 1960, all Swiss locomotive manufacturers merged to become one single company, BBC. In 1988, this company in turn merged with the Swedish group Asea to become ABB. ABB built the last Swiss electric locomotive, the Lok 2000. In the 1996, ABB and Daimler-Benz merged their railway activities in one company, Adtranz.
