Single tone warning bell
St. Gotthard Railway GB 1897
Signal flags and bells were among the first communication means used in railway traffic. The first Swiss railway had already set up rules in 1847 for bell sounds. Even the passengers were informed about the bell sounds. Switzerland started in 1875 with the introduction of electrically remote controlled bell systems. At the St. Gotthard railway as well as later at the Swiss Federal Railways, bells were only used for service purposes. They announced the departure of the train at the previous station. The sequence of tones indicated the direction from which the train was coming.
