The Hipp turning disc
Orange distant signal from NOB mandatory signal from RhB
This Swiss speciality was used as main and as distant signal. The colours had the same meaning as the colours of the night signal. Driven by a weight movement that is triggered by an electric light current impulse, the disc rotates vertically. About every 200 movements, the weight of the movement had to be wound up by hand. Compared to purely mechanical signals, which were set by means of long wire transmissions, the Hipp disc was more reliable, especially during the winter. The inventor was head of federal telegraphy works.
