The Railway to heaven leads into the perpetual ice
Travelling comfortably into the glacier! To protect against freezing, the locomotive and the carriage were lined with wood. Inside, felt cushions and plush created a cosy atmosphere. The train construction designed by the British engineer W.R. Rowan coupled the locomotive and the carriages to become a four-axled unity. The locomotive was supporting a part of the weight of the carriage, it could thus be built more lightweight, which made its operation more economical.
The highest: the Jungfrau Railway
The Railway to heaven leads into the perpetual ice
On the Jungfraujoch, the Jungfrau Railway reaches an altitude of 11’332 feet above sea level, it is therefore the highest situated railway station in Europe. The plans to make this top accessible had existed for a long time, but Adolf Guyer-Zeller was the first who dared to tackle this difficult venture. The construction lasted from 1896 to 1912.
