Harley-Davidson JD
USA 1927
Modest beginnings
In 1903, William S. Harley und Arthur Davidson founded the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in a tiny woodshed in Milwaukee. Today, Harley-Davidson is the last remaining American motorcycle manufacturer.
Same shape since 1925
The Type JD machine is typical of the American marque to this day. 1925 saw the first appearance of the teardrop fuel tank which, along with the 45-degree V2 engine, the primary drive cover and the thick tyres, makes Harley-Davidsons easily recognisable to all.
Across the Pond
The machines first came to Europe in 1917 when the USA entered the First World War. The olive-green colour has nothing to do with the military; civilian Harleys were also painted in this colour. When taken out of military service, the robust motorcycles were quick to win numerous European admirers.
