The Imme from Immenstadt
In the Second World War, Norbert Riedel designed the starting motor for the Messerschmidt 262, the world’s first jet fighter. He had extensive experience of motorcycle construction and designing 2-stroke engines, and he founded a motorcycle factory in Immenstadt, Allgäu (Bavaria).
The art of omission
Riedels light motorcycle stands out for what it does not have. The whole vehicle is limited as far as possible to the bare essentials. Some components even have two different functions, such as the rear swinging fork, which also serves as the exhaust pipe.
Too progressive for conservative buyers
The Imme’s unorthodox appearance, and the fact that motorcycle buyers had (and still have) a fixed idea of what a motorcycle should look like, may explain why this unusual motorcycle was manufactured only for a relatively short time. In autumn 1951 Norbert Riedel went bankrupt.
