Moser, model 500 OHV Popular, 1932
This motorcycle is a moving testament to the golden age of the Swiss motorcycle industry. Manufactured by Fritz Moser in St. Aubin (NE), the “Populaire” model represents an attempt to combine the highest technical quality with the economic constraints of the early 1930s. The year 1932 was marked by the global economic crisis. While the market for pure luxury vehicles collapsed, customers demanded robust, durable machines for everyday use without compromising on performance. The nickname “Populaire” suggests popularity, but technically the Moser was in the top league: the powerful OHV engine (overhead valves) was a design that Moser also supplied to other manufacturers internationally and was famous for its stability on hills. The 500 OHV impresses with its classic pre-war aesthetics: the open valve train, the trapezoidal fork and the rigid frame. It symbolises the reputation that Swiss motorcycles enjoyed at the time – they were not massproduced off the assembly line, but rather mechanical engineering of watchmaker quality, built for the topographical challenges of the Alps.
