Side Motor
Switzerland 1923
Motorbike boom after 1918
The „Side Motor“ was created in 1923, in a time in which Switzerland experienced its first motorcycle boom. Small and very small companies everywhere were producing motorbikes with bought-in engines and components. 24 machines were produced in the Fabrik für Drehmaschinen (lathe factory) in Moutier.
Unique specimen of vehicle dynamics
From the viewpoint of vehicle dynamics, a sidecar combination is ridiculous; because it is asymmetrical, it drives and brakes on the left differently from the right. One solution for this would be a real three-wheeler. But with three wheels, one wheel always runs on the less solidified centre of unpaved roads.
A combination of both advantages
The Side Motor is intended to combine the advantages of the three-wheeler with those of a combination. The engine sits in the „attachment“ and drives the left rear wheel via gears. The low step-over to the drivers saddle also makes it into a ladies’ saddle, and the weight is distributed between the „machine“ and the „sidecar“ in a balanced manner. As there are only two running tracks, it drives like a sidecar combination or a car on country roads that have often been worn into two tracks.
