An airship frame made from plywood
Apart from the Zeppelins which had a metal frame, a total of 21 airships were constructed at the Schütte-Lanz factories in Germany from 1909 to 1918. The company specialised in wooden structures. These large airships were intended for military purposes and were designed on scientific principles. They had an extremely aerodynamic shape right from the start and, in some aspects, were superior to the early Zeppelins with their long, cylindrical centre sections.
With a length of up to 198 m, these airships count as amongst the largest-ever craft to be constructed from wood. The displayed girder section is glued from three-ply aspen wood and features weight-saving holes.
