Zehnder ladies' model, 1924
The still-vibrant history of Zehnder began in 1895, when Jakob Zehnder founded a small workshop in Gränichen, Switzerland. Motorcycle production took place between 1923 and 1940. The ladies’ model of the “Zehnderli”, with a low-slung frame for easy mounting and a forward-moun-ted fuel tank, was popular with “midwives, parish priests and ladies who enjoyed motorcycling” (original text). Its climbing ability was stated as up to 20%, thanks to its 2 gears it could travel between 4 and 60 km/h, fuel consumption was a moderate 1 litre per 40 km, and peak power was 2.25 hp – which went down well. Horizontal two-stroke engine (1:10 mixture lubrication) with sack cylinder (no removable cylinder head), belt drive.
