Entry into the motorcycle business
After the First World War, like many suppliers to the armaments industry, the „J. Zehnder & Söhne“ company in Granichen, Aargau, is looking for new business areas and, in 1923, decides to build a light motorcycle.
Success for the „Zehnderli“
The auxiliary bicycle engine from Fritz Gockerell in Munich serves as the drive. Increased to 2.25 hp, and fitted with a self-constructed light frame, the „Zehnderli“ quickly develops into a best seller. Successes at national and international sports events underline the quality of the brand.
From the hot furnace to the warming radiator
The „Zehnderli“ continues to be manufactured virtually unchanged until 1934. In view of the economic crisis, however, and with wise foresight, Zehnder expands his range of products as early as 1930 to include heating radiators, whose innovative element was that they are welded together from tubes instead of being cast in one piece. The Swiss epitome of the light motorcycle thereby becomes an internationally leading manufacturer of radiators.
