Noble tinkerer
Karl Friedrich Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn (1785-1851) experiments with technology: as well as a submarine, a periscope and a typewriter for notes or coded text, in 1817 he invented his “moving machine”
Proof of genuineness
Drais sends potential customers a brochure with which they can have their moving machines built by a local workshop. When the licence fee is paid to Drais, he sends the customer a plate with his initials and the Drais coat-of-arms as proof of genuineness.
Success but no profit
Soon his moving machines are copied all over Europe, a result of the lack of patent protection. The short period in bloom brings the Freiherr no profit. Drais succumbs to alcohol and suffers from a persecution complex. He is given a legal guardian in 1851 and dies shortly afterwards.
