Wide-bodied aircraft
If the introduction of commercial jet aircraft had already brought a significant boost to carrying capacity, this was to undergo a further huge increase from 1970 with the introduction of the Boeing 747, Douglas DC-10 and Lockheed TriStar wide-bodied aircraft. Air travel, previously reserved for the wealthy, became affordable and thus a commodity item for a broad section of the population.

Efficiency versus speed
The aircraft as a global means of transport has achieved exceptional reliability and made us aware that there are no longer any purely domestic markets. Great efforts have been made and are being made to reduce the negative effects on those around us. An expression of this trend is that extensive introduction of a supersonic travel has not come about and that the trend towards large aircraft and thus fewer aircraft movements (Airbus A380) as well as towards long-haul aircraft with fewer yet more powerful, more efficient and quieter engines (Boeing 777) is continuing. Besides this, small turboprop aircraft provide flexible services in regional air traffic.
