The “EURECA” research satellite was launched into space from the space shuttle “Atlantis” by Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier on 1 August 1992. As a small unmanned space station, EURECA orbited the Earth at an altitude of around 500 km. A total of 71 biological and technical experiments into the long-term effects of gravity and cosmic rays were conducted over a period of 11 months before EURECA was captured and returned to Earth by the space shuttle “Endeavour”. Although in principle re-usable, EURECA was not launched again due to the concentration of resources on manned space travel. The original EURECA is also on display here in the Swiss Museum of Transport.
