From chair to gondola
The installation in Braunwald was built by the company of the Giovanola brothers in Monthey, Canton Valais founded in 1888. Following the end of the Second World War, they developed their own form of detachable-grip cableway system. The grip system invented by Marc Dumour and patented in 1949 relied, unlike those of his rivals (Von Roll, Müller), entirely on gravity. The success of this cable-grip system lay in its shunning of complicated spring-based closing mechanisms.
Braunwald's innovative and aesthetically pleasing circulating cableway, featuring two-person gondolas that protected the passenger from the weather, became a tourist attraction. In those days, chairlifts were not yet capable of conveying passengers with skis on their feet. The compact, relatively light gondola could be incorporated into existing chairlift installations and even used in combination with chairs. The Alpboden-Haldigrat cableway in Dallenwil NW adopted just such an approach: in 2007 three of the former Braunwald gondolas were incorporated into the cableway to keep staff dry in inclement weather.
