Bucher/Canard Aviation Canard 2 FL
A Glider that flies “Backwards”
When a conventional aircraft climbs, its elevator presses the tail of the plane downwards, whereby lifts is cancelled out – a contradiction as such. On “canard”-type aircraft the elevator is situated at the front, so that the planes have greater aerodynamic efficiency. On the Canard 2 FL the elevator is fixed. The pilot, who ha to lie on his belly, regulates the speed through shifting the centre of gravity by sliding either forwards or backwards.
The development of the Bucher Canard 2 FL (canard = duck) began in August 1976 on the basis of a preliminary project that had been underway since 1972. On 13th August 1978 the first successful flight was carried out. Subsequently numerous other flights were made over a total of around 60 hours flying time and various improvements were realized.
Two versions with engines (Canard SC as well as Colibri) flew in 1983 and 1984. In 1993 the production was discontinued.
