The geographical barriers fall
Louis Blériot’s crossing the English Channel in 1909 proved that there were no more geographical barriers to aviation. The potential of First World War multi-engined bomber aircraft was clearly demonstrated by the long-distance flights in the years after 1918: the first transatlantic flights were made in 1919 using military aircraft. John Alcock and Arthur Whitten-Brown flew from Newfoundland to Ireland in a Vickers Vimy and Albert C. Read in stages from New York via the Azores and Lisbon to Plymouth in a Curtiss NC-4 flying boat.
