Fighters and bombers
Aircraft played an important role in the First World War. Single-seater fighters such as the French Nieuport 28 C-1 or the German Fokker D-VII reached almost 200 km/hr and height of up to 6000 Meter. This enabled them to track down enemy positions and defend the airspace against attacking aircraft. Bombers replaced the initially employed airships and could cover ever greater distances.
