Nieuport N-28 C-1
Fighter-Plane for 2'233 Swiss Francs
Around the time of the First World War, Nieuport was one of the best known names in military aviation. Already his third construction achieved the world-record speed of 110 km/h!
Nieuport died in an aeroplane crash in 1911. His aircraft factory, however, continued to exist and produced a succession of remarkable fighter-planes, among them the N-28, known as Bébé in Switzerland.
On 14th June 1917 the first N-28 started on its maiden flight. In summer 1918 an N-28 of the American Air Force had to make a forced landing near Solothurn. The Swiss Air Force took over the machine and with it, in 1922 at the international air show in Dübendorf, won the aerobatics competition.
In 1921 and 1922 Switzerland purchased 14 Nieuport N-28 C-1 from the surplus stocks of the former warring nations, at a price of 2'233 francs for each (including spare engines). Battered by their wartime usage, however, they had to be withdrawn from service after only a few hundred flying hours. The aeroplane exhibited is one of this serie.
