Modern commercial aircraft
Europe responded with the construction on its own high-speed commercial aircraft such as the Heinkel HE-70 „Blitz“, the Junkers Ju-60 and the Junkers Ju-86 which had be retractable undercarriages following the American example.
With the Douglas DC-2 and especially the DC-3, there emerged in the USA the forefathers of the entire series of successful Douglas commercial aircraft types. The counterpart of the C-47 „Dakota“, the military version of the DC-3, was the German Junkers Ju-52, which also gave outstanding service first as a passenger aircraft and later as a troop transporter.
