On 17 December 1903, the Wright brothers succeeded in making the first powered flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (USA). A four-cylinder engine developing 9 kW (12 HP) was sufficient to lift their ingenious twin-propeller homemade craft into the air. Among the many measures they adopted to reduce air resistance was to place the pilot in a prone position. He used his left hand to operate the elevator and hip movements to adjust the rudder and the outer trailing edges of the wing. The first flight by Orville Wright lasted 12 seconds and covered 37 metres. On the same day Wilbur Wright flew 260 metres in 59 seconds.
