On the way to becoming a means of transport
The Swiss cross abroad
Competition between the cities of Geneva, Basel, Berne and Zurich to get involved in the anticipated international air traffic had already begun during the Second World War in response to the aviation boom brought about by the war.
On 2 May 1947 a Swissair DC-4 started out from the Ginevra-Cointrin airport for the first transatlantic crossing. The runway was extended by 400 metres to 1,200 metres especially for the new DC-4 machines.
As an internationally active, national Swiss airline, Swissair quickly bought more powerful aircraft such as the DC-6 and DC-7 (with pressurised cabins) for the long-haul routes and Convair 240 and Convair 440 « Metropolitan » for the European destinations.
