Not powerful enough to fly
Ernst Rech (*1891) was one of the first Swiss aviation pioneers. He broke off his studies at the Technical Institute in order to devote his time entirely to the construction of aircraft. His first model was flown in 1910. The Cockchafer (Maikäfer) was probably his second motorized aeroplane; it flew for the first time in 1911.
Because of its weak motor, this machine was only capable of making short hops - thus the name Cockchafer.
In 1912 Rech built a more powerful aircraft (with a 22kW / 30 hp engine), that achieved a speed of 95 km/h.
In 1913 Rech was killed in an accident at Dübendorf Airfield.
