Description
Wings-only aircraft Soldenhoff SL-1, Switzerland 1936
An Artist’s Creation
Born in Geneva, Alexander Soldenhoff (1882-1951) was at first a teacher, then a painter and head of the theatre-workshop at the Municipal Theatre of Frankfurt, poet, author of a play – and in his “spare time” a builder of aeroplanes. His “constructions” were simply a pastime to begin with, but from 1913 he began to develop planes seriously. His aim was to build a wings-only aircraft that with the minimum engine capacity could achieve a maximum flying capacity.
From 1929 on Soldenhoff built his tail-less aircraft in Germany. He had several successes, but also numerous failures. His greatest handicap was that he, as a non-technician, lacked the ability to produce the calculations required by the authorities.
The aircraft exhibited is his last model, the SL-1 (also known as S-5). It was again built in Switzerland (in Langenthal) but shortage of money prevented its being put on the test in the air.
