The jet revolution
Losers and winners
With the CV-990 Coronado, Convair deliberately brought onto the market a pure jet aircraft which was intended to be even faster than the competition. The Bristol Britannia is a long-haul aircraft with four turboprop engines, which placed greater emphasis on comfort and economy. In economic terms, neither aircraft was granted success. The CV-990 achieved the promises results only after lengthy modifications: despite its nickname of “whispering giant”, the Bristol Britannia found few buyers. In contrast, the turbo-engined short-haul Fokker F-27 and DC-9-15 aircraft became the epitome of a new generation of shuttle aircraft.
