Bell 47-G1
The First Successful Helicopter
The Bell 47 was the first helicopter in the world to be granted the concession for civil aviation. This was in 1946. For long it was absolutely “the” helicopter; its most widespread version was the Bell 47G (first flown 1953) on display here. The type was built in large numbers in various countries until well into the Sixties.
From 1947 on, the Bell 47 was also the first helicopter licensed to spray chemicals for pest control, and Argentina achieved a highly successful breakthrough the same year – for the first time – in the fight against the locust plague.
This machine was also the standard helicopter in Switzerland for a long time; its success was, however, limited by the inadequate performance of its piston-engine in high altitudes.
