RS-40 helicopter by Robert Stierlin
An amateur prototype
Robert Stierlin from Meyrin GE, born in 1926, built five helicopters in his spare time. The first prototype, built in 1948, did not have sufficient engine power. But his second machine took off successfully in 1954, becoming the first helicopter designed in Switzerland able to fly. Stierlin made his break-through in 1965 with the fourth prototype, exhibited here. The fifth machine, a two-seater, crashed in 1969 as the result of engine failure. Stierlin and his passenger lost their lives in the accident.
30 years later the Geneva “Sécurité Civile“ rescue helicopter (in operation until 2004) was given the name “Robert Stierlin“ in honour of the amateur designer.
