Gnome 7 N rotary engine no. 2381 from Oskar Bider, France 1912/13
Pioneering era: first mass-produced aircraft engine
In terms of power and low weight, the rotary engine produced by the Seguin brothers in 1908 put all its peers in the shade. Subjected to further development and manufactured in its tens of thousands in a number of countries, it was the most widely deployed aero engine in the First World War. However, the gyroscopic effect and centrifugal forces exerted by this increasingly large engine type (the whole engine rotated about its axis) led to its rapid demise after 1918, as did its high fuel consumption.
The 80 hp engine on display was used by aviation pioneer Oskar Bider from Langenbruck, Canton Basel-Landschaft in his Blériot XI (April 1913), after Louis Blériot and the Gnome engine factory had advised him not to attempt crossing the Alps with his 70 hp engine. Bider made the first crossing of the Alps – from Bern to Milan – with the 80 hp engine on 13 July 1913. Bider’s Blériot XI was destroyed in a crash landing on 10 September 1913, but the engine was repaired and used later to power his second Blériot, also exhibited in this hall.
