Pioneering era: a meticulously crafted engine
Founded in Barcelona by the Swiss design engineer Marc Birkigt in 1904, the Hispano-Suiza car factory soon established a subsidiary near Paris, which also started developing aero engines in 1914. These were conceived in a V configuration, with the rows of cylinders incorporated into two aluminium monoblocks each comprising four, later six, screwed-in steel cylinder linings, an aluminium cylinder head with two enclosed overhead valve body assemblies and the crankcase, also in aluminium. The engine made enormous demands of the company’s manufacturing capabilities, as well as those of the licensees in the USA, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK, yet it revolutionised engine design.
First used by the allies in SPAD fighter aircraft in 1916, the engines proved exceptionally reliable. More powerful engines built on the same principle continued to be developed and were later incorporated into numerous aircraft of the Swiss Air Force, such as the Dewoitine D-27 III built under licence by Jagdflugzeug Dewoitine D-27 III der Schweizer Fliegertruppe mit Motor vom Typ K+W, Thun in 1931–1944.
