Old and new compared Aero engine by Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Oerlikon, Switzerland 1911/12
Pioneering era: far lighter than a car engine
While early aviation pioneers had to build their own engines, from 1910 many enterprises began marketing aero engines. The need for high power and ultra low weight and the use of new, light materials such as aluminium presented major challenges. In 1910 the Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Oerlikon company developed Switzerland’s first aero engine. Sporting an open crankcase fashioned from aluminium to save weight, it was made in a small batch of 14 in 1911/12.
Amongst the first customers were Swiss aviation pioneers Armand and Henri Dufaux and René Grandjean. Its considerable power meant that the compact boxer engine found customers in other countries, too. Product ceased in 1913 due to competition from mass produced, higher powered engines.
