Coastship “Simplon”, built in 1944
Its design is typical of the craft used in the European coasting trade; formerly under Swiss flag, now in German possession.
The Swiss Merchant Fleet
In 2014 our fleet consisted of 46 vessels with a total of 869'563 tons deadweight, and was composed of freighters of general cargo (machinery, manufactured goods, containers, liquid in barrels, etc.), and bulk carriers for ore, coal, grain, phosphates etc. Some ships of the fleet sail fixed trade-routes between Europe, Africa and America, and the remainder sails according to the vagaries of the freight marked, on tramping terms.
The owner has to equip the vessel, recruit the crew, supply the necessary victuals and is responsible for running the vessel.
