Frame of the American military airship “Akron”, 1931
Two large Zeppelin airships, the “Akron” and the “Macon” were constructed in the USA in 1931 and 1933. They were filled with hazard-free helium as the buoyancy gas and were deployed as flying aircraft carriers over the Atlantic and Pacific until they both crashed in extreme weather conditions. The 240 m long Zeppelins were equipped with many innovations, including hinged propellers and inboard engines, and were regarded as technical masterpieces. A principal role in the development of these airships at Goodyear in Akron (Ohio) was played by Dr Karl Arnstein. As a static engineer, he also contributed to the calculation of the railway viaduct on the Chur-Arosa line. Later, he worked on airship construction for Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH in Friedrichshafen, Germany, before emigrating to the USA in 1924.
