Ariane 1 payload fairing
European carrier rocket
As part of the European development programme for the Ariane carrier rocket, Contraves AG, Zurich, was awarded the contract in 1974 for the payload fairing. This part of the rocket serves to protect satellites against environmental influences during the rocket’s launch into orbit. After breaking through the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, the fairing is divided into 2 sections and fired off at a height of approx. 100 km. The faultless operation of the fairing contributed substantially to the success of the three Ariane 1 qualification flights between 1979 and 1981. The payload fairings of the later Ariane versions 2, 3 and 4, as well as the totally redesigned Ariane 5 rocket all stem from Contraves Space AG (now Oerlikon Space).
