Sulzer Diesel Engine 1946
MS Waldstätter
What began as a steamer on the >Thames in London was converted in Lucerne in 1911 into the DS Rhein, a ship with a lounge (operational until 1940). The hull of the ship was reconstructed in 1948 to accommodate a propeller drive with diesel engines, and the ship became the MS Waldstätter. In 1960 the MS Waldstätter was fitted with new diesel engines, however, which remained in operation until the ship was taken out of service in 1997.
A comparison between the Waldstätter diesel engine and the engines of the steamer, DS Pilatus, shows the similarity in size of both ships. On the other hand, there is a considerable and striking difference in the operating efficiency of the diesel ship, which only requires a 4-man crew. The diesel engine dies not need the same expensive and time-consuming care and attention as that required to heat up boilers, for example or the constant attention of an engineer and a stoker. There are noticeable differences in the capacities of these comparable engines and in the considerably lower fuel consumption per kilometre travelled.
