Push tugs, lighters and holds
The separation of cargo (lighter) and propulsion (push tug) is just as much a practical result of good economic management as 24 hr push tug operation. The Dutch production series introduced the first push tug in Europe designed for continuous operation by 2 crews: 2 captain’s cabins, 4 double cabins for the crew, air-conditioning, sound and heat insulation etc.
Push tugs do not have their own cargo holds. Lighters do not have their own propulsion systems. The holds in push tugs are used to store fresh water (15 t), fuel (approx. 35 t of diesel oil) and 10 t of ballast water for weight balancing, so that the propellers can be optimally positioned and the whole tug can float lower in the water to pass under bridges.
