Transhipment in the Rhine Port of Basle
Roughly 9% (in 2014: 6 million tons) of Switzerland’s imports enter the country through the Rhine ports of Basle.
Modern harbour facilities, including cranes, suction appliances, conveyor belts, pumps etc. help to handle incoming cargo. Part of this may be temporarily stored in the silos, storing sheds or open storage areas available. The majority will be transferred directly from the Rhine ships onto railway wagons and delivered by the Swiss Federal Railways to places of destination all over the country. Another important share of the ships’ cargo is forwarded by road. Transit freight (mainly to Italy) makes up a fair percentage.
The sites of the two Rhine ports are owned by the cantons of Basle-City and Basle-Country, respectively, and let to stevedoring and storing companies on long-term lease.
